When is the Peg System useful?
Pegs are most useful when position is part of the question. They give a short list stable addresses, so you can ask for item 7 directly instead of walking through items 1 to 6.
Good starting uses
- A short numbered list or ranked set of points.
- Presentation points that must stay in a planned order.
- A packing, errands, or shopping list that you want to query by position.
- A short procedural outline after you already understand the process.
- Concrete facts that can be converted into specific images without changing their meaning.
Choose another support when
- The material already has a clear conceptual or category structure that is easier to understand directly.
- You need exact wording, a complete document, or several long-lived lists at once.
- A written checklist is safer, especially for medication, emergencies, legal steps, or other high-stakes instructions.

Learn the pegs before attaching a list
A target has little chance of returning if the number does not produce its permanent peg. Separate peg learning from target learning during your first session.
- Choose one image per peg: Decide what your bun, shoe, tree, and other pegs look like. Reuse the same version instead of redesigning it for every list.
- Practise number to peg: Ask 4 and answer door. Ask 9 and answer vine. Mix the order so you do not depend on counting from one.
- Practise peg to number: Ask hive and answer 5. Ask hen and answer 10. This reverse direction helps expose pegs that are only vaguely learned.
- Retest the slow positions: Do not keep repeating the whole set equally. Return to any number that causes hesitation, confusion, or a need to recite forward.

Build a peg-target interaction, not two separate pictures
A peg and target placed beside one another can remain two unrelated objects. Make them touch, move, transform, damage, use, or react to each other. The action should make the target easy to identify when the peg returns.
Unusual detail can help when it clarifies the connection, but bizarre imagery is not automatically better. A simple, active scene that preserves the exact answer is more useful than a spectacular scene whose meaning is vague.

Test forward, backward, and in random order
Forward recall can hide a weak Peg System because the previous answer may cue the next one. Backward and random prompts test whether each number has its own direct route to the target.
Attempt every answer before revealing it. If you need to reveal the peg, count that as an assisted response. That distinction tells you whether the permanent peg failed or the temporary peg-target link failed.

A useful repair protocol
- Hide the targets and attempt every position without looking.
- Mark a miss, hesitation, or assisted answer instead of treating all three as correct.
- Decide whether the number failed to produce the peg or the peg failed to produce the target.
- Check the correct answer and rebuild only the weak association.
- Retest all positions in a new random order so the repaired item is not predictable.
- If the material matters later, retrieve it again after a delay instead of assuming that one successful test made it permanent.

Can you reuse the same pegs?
Yes. The pegs are intended to stay permanent while temporary targets change. Reuse is possible, but the retained study tested a structured combined pegword-keyword procedure rather than every way of reusing pegs. Treat several simultaneously active lists as a separate challenge instead of assuming the same result.
In two experiments, Carney and Levin reported 2- and 5-day delayed benefits when students reused the same ten pegs in that combined strategy after initial learning was equated. The result depends on the tested task, training, encoding procedure, and retention interval; it does not establish that every reuse setup is equally reliable.
- Reuse the pegs for a short-lived list once the old list is no longer needed.
- Keep a durable association stable while you still need it.
- Use a separate route, location set, or cue system for several long-lived lists.
- Treat an old answer as an intrusion to diagnose, not as proof that the method has failed.

The narrow, defensible conclusion is that a Peg System can help organize and retrieve material for particular tasks, especially when exact position matters. Roediger compared four mnemonic conditions in 150 students. When scoring required both the word and its serial position, the immediate results favored the peg and loci conditions. That result supports position-based testing, not a claim of general memory improvement.
Other findings are mixed across learners, materials, training, and delay. Studies have reported immediate benefits without a retained advantage under some conditions, delayed benefits when the same pegs were reused as part of a structured combined strategy, and speed-accuracy trade-offs when peg strategies were compared with direct interactive imagery.
The practical response is not to reject or oversell the method. Match it to an ordered task, learn the pegs fluently, test without cues, correct errors, and return after a delay if the information matters.
